About the FFMA
We are excited about the formation of the Florida
Floodplain Managers Association (FFMA), the Florida chapter
of the national Association
of State Flood Plain Managers (ASFPM). The FFMA was formed
to improve floodplain management in Florida by supporting
comprehensive management of floodplains and related water
resources. FFMA believes that through coordination and education,
the public and private sectors can reduce loss of life and
properties resulting from floods, preserve the natural and
cultural values of floodplains, and avoid actions that increase
flood hazards.
To help reach these goals, FFMA and ASFPM fosters
communication among those responsible for flood hazard activities,
provides technical and advice to governments and others about
actions or policies that will affect flooding, and encourages
flood hazard research, education and training. The following
activities are an important part of the organization on both
a national and local level.
Information Exchange
Each member, committee chair, board member and partnering
organization provides ideas that are incorporated into the
development of resolutions, guidance, training programs, workshops
and conferences. Use of that material in communities, agencies,
companies or organizations is greatly encouraged.
Our website also offers information regarding
upcoming training opportunities and provides access to publications
of interest. We are developing a "Members Only"
area that will include an interactive event calendar and discussion
boards for fostering meaningful exchanges between the members.
The site also lists CFM exam locations that may be proctored
by other members.
Publications and Newsletters
"Plain Talk" is produced semi-annually as Fall/Winter
and Spring/Summer and is currently e-mailed to our members.
An interim newsletter called "Post Script" is being
produced to inform members of training available for maintaining
their certification.
Membership
Membership composition includes state and local floodplain
managers and a broad representation of federal agency staff,
private industry, academia, research and related organization
representatives. The FFMA now has over 300 members and growing.
Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) Program
The Certified Floodplain Manager Program developed by the
ASFPM is a phenomenal success with over ninety-one CFMs in
the State of Florida. Members have proctored the exam in several
locations both in conjunction with workshops and privately.
